Heavy Duty Wire Mesh Decking
Heavy Duty Wire Mesh Decking is a welded steel panel that drops onto pallet racking beams and turns an open level into a load-bearing surface. In 5.0 mm wire with three or four support bars it carries a 1,000 kg UDL per panel. Four standard sizes, galvanized or powder coated.
Heavy Duty Wire Mesh Decking: Specifications, Load Ratings and Applications
Overview
Heavy Duty Wire Mesh Decking is a welded steel wire panel that drops onto pallet racking beams and turns an open beam level into a load-bearing surface. The panels in this range are built for demanding warehouse storage, with 5.0 mm wire and three or four flared support bars giving a 1,000 kg uniformly distributed load per panel.
Four panel sizes are held as standard, covering 1,150 mm and 1,350 mm beam widths against 900 mm and 1,100 mm rack depths. Non-standard sizes, apertures and wire diameters are made to order against your beam drawing.

Load Capacity: What Determines Strength
The uniformly distributed load a panel can carry is not fixed by product name. It follows from five variables, and changing any one of them changes the rating. Two panels that look identical in a photograph can carry very different loads once span and support bar count are taken into account.

Impact on Load |
Technical Explanation |
|
1. Wire diameter |
Critical |
Wire diameter is the primary driver of strength. Heavier wire raises the section modulus of every strand, so the panel resists bending over the same span with less deflection. 5.0 mm wire suits heavy pallets; lighter mesh suits cartons and picking modules. |
|
2. Mesh aperture |
High |
The size of the grid openings, for example 50 mm × 100 mm against 50 mm × 50 mm. A smaller aperture means more wires per square metre, so the load spreads across more points and the panel gains structural density. It also stops smaller items falling through. |
|
3. Support profile |
Critical |
How the panel connects to the beam. A U-channel boxed edge carries load through the formed channel. A flared or waterfall edge relies on the bent peripheral wires hooking the beam flange - faster to install, but it depends on the wires holding their shape. |
|
4. Span |
Critical |
The distance between the front and rear beams. Span is the variable most often missed: capacity falls with the square of the span, so a longer span needs heavier wire or an extra bar to hold the same rating. A 600 mm span carries far more than a 1,200 mm span in the same mesh. |
|
5. Steel and finish |
Moderate |
The wire is drawn from high-tensile steel, and the finish sets how the panel behaves in service. Galvanizing suits humid and unheated buildings; powder coating gives a cleaner surface where appearance matters. |

Panel size is given as beam width × rack depth. Other widths and depths, apertures and wire diameters are produced to order. Finish options are galvanized or powder coated.
Applications
The panel suits a wide range of storage and handling environments. It is ordered as extra wide wire decking and deep rack wire decking for unusual rack dimensions, and as Euro size wire decking where European pallet footprints are in use. Industrial mesh inserts, metal grid inserts and grid style decking cover the same requirement across distribution centres, while light duty wire mesh shelving and wire shelving panels serve picking faces and hand-loaded levels.
On the rack itself the same construction appears as wire rack platforms, wire mesh rack frames and wire mesh storage decks, and as storage rack wire grids, steel rack mesh floor and racking wire floor on beam levels. For load carrying specifically it is specified as steel grid shelving, pallet support wire mesh, pallet rack wire surface and heavy duty wire panels, and where containment or walk-on access is needed as industrial mesh inserts, warehouse safety decking and reinforced channel wire decking. Aperture, wire diameter and support bar count are selected for the duty and the span in each case.
Installation and Care
- Fitting: the panel drops onto the beam and the flared edge hooks the flange. Check that the edge is fully seated at both ends before loading.
- Loading: keep loads evenly distributed. A point load concentrated in one spot reduces the capacity of the panel well below its UDL rating.
- Inspection: check for permanent deflection or damage from forklift impact. A deformed edge reduces the grip on the beam and the panel should be replaced.
- Coating: where the finish is cut or damaged in service, touch it up to keep corrosion from spreading.
