The Development History Of Plastic Products

Sep 11, 2025

Compared to metals, stone, and wood, plastic products have advantages such as low cost and high plasticity, leading to their widespread application in the national economy. The plastics industry holds a vital position globally, with production experiencing rapid growth worldwide for many years. China consistently ranks among the world's leading producers of plastic products, with several products ranking first globally. China has become a major global plastics producer. From 2001 to 2010, China's average annual growth rate for plastic product output remained above 15%, reaching a total output of 58.3 million tons in 2010.

From a demand perspective, China's per capita plastic consumption still lags significantly behind developed countries. Statistics show that China's plastic-to-steel ratio, a key indicator of a country's plastics industry development, is only 30:70, lower than the world average of 50:50 and far below developed countries like the US (70:30) and Germany (63:37). With future technological advancements in modified plastics and consumption upgrades, China's plastics production demand is expected to maintain a growth rate of over 10%.

The wide range of applications and the vast downstream industries provide strong support for the development of China's plastics industry. With the release of the "Detailed Rules for the Revitalization of the Petrochemical Industry," China's plastic products industry is ushering in new development opportunities. The market demand for plastic products in China is mainly concentrated in agricultural plastic products, packaging plastic products, construction plastic products, and industrial, transportation, and engineering plastic products.
