You cannot build your way out of that gap, so you extract throughput from the footprint you have: tighter slotting, higher density, and standardised plastic bins that automation can grip.
Packaging rules are becoming mandatory. Australia's 2025 National Packaging Targets - 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging, 70% of plastic recycled, and 50% recycled content - were missed, accelerating the shift to binding rules. Draft national mandatory regulations were expected in Q2–Q3 2026, and APCO is developing eco-modulated fees for businesses above A$5 million turnover. Western Australia has already banned specified moulded and cut expanded-plastic packaging. Reusable plastic storage bins reduce that exposure rather than defer it.

HDPE vs PP: What Each Resin Actually Delivers
Material choice decides whether a bin survives its duty cycle, and the two workhorse resins behave very differently.

Because refrigerated warehousing leads the Australian market by type, HDPE plastic crates are the default for chilled and frozen work; HDPE holds impact strength down to -40 °C. PP suits hot fill, steam cleaning, and wash cycles, and its higher stiffness allows thinner walls at equal rigidity. Where plastic bins are staged outdoors - common in agricultural, mining, and regional distribution - specify UV-stabilised resin, since standard grades chalk and embrittle under sustained sun.
For small components, dividable storage bins and plastic spare parts trays in PP remain the standard for fasteners, electronic components, and maintenance spares.
Nestable, Stackable or Foldable: Choosing the Right Geometry
Geometry is where the freight and storage maths gets decided.
• Stackable plastic bins maximise cube when full. They are the baseline for racking, shelving, and automated handling.
• Nestable plastic bins collapse into each other when empty, cutting the volume of the return leg.
• Foldable plastic turnover containers go furthest, reducing empty volume by around 75% - significant when units travel long distances to Australia and return empty.
Collapsible plastic turnover containers are growing faster than the category average, driven by that return-leg arithmetic. Many sites run two formats: a rigid stackable unit at the pick face and a foldable unit for replenishment.

Specifications to Lock Down Before You Request a Quote
A vague RFQ produces vague quotes. Three items are worth specifying before you request pricing for plastic bins.
Footprint and tolerance. The 600 × 400 mm footprint is the de-facto grid for automated handling, with common sizes from 600 × 400 × 148 mm to 600 × 500 × 400 mm and 650 × 440 × 370 mm. For bench-level work, dividable storage bins in 400 × 300 × 260 mm (roughly 16 L) are the usual choice. Where units run on conveyors, AGVs, or AS/RS, ask for the tolerance on critical dimensions - a few millimetres of drift will jam a gripper.
Load capacity and duty cycle. Request static, dynamic, and stacked figures for the exact SKU, supported by a test report. A load rating quoted without its test condition is marketing, not engineering.
Accessories and identification. Dividers, hinged lids, card slots, and RFID tag slots change how plastic storage bins behave in a WMS environment. Units bound for AS/RS need a flat, anti-slip base to stay stable on roller conveyors.
Procurement Pain Points and How to Avoid Them
Virgin resin versus recycled content. Virgin HDPE delivers predictable impact strength; recycled content supports the sustainability reporting that Australian customers and APCO obligations increasingly require. The mistake is accepting a generic "high-quality HDPE" claim - write the resin grade and standard into the purchase order and request the material declaration.
Supplier red flags. No ISO 9001 certification, refusal to supply material test reports or samples, prices more than 30% below market, or vague technical replies usually signal inconsistent resin or poor mould control.
Total cost beats unit price. Life-cycle assessments of reusable containers against single-use cartons show roughly 68% lower greenhouse gas emissions, 99% less waste to landfill, and 85% lower water use. Independent Australian research put savings at up to A$9.27 per container, driven mainly by reduced product damage, longer shelf life, and lower labour. Cheap plastic storage bins that crack in year two destroy that maths.
Freight and lead time. Bins are light but bulky, so nestable and foldable HDPE plastic crates materially change landed cost per unit. Budget two to four weeks of production plus two to four weeks of sea freight, with buffer ahead of the Australian peak.
